Common Xbox Faults

Common Xbox Problems We Repair

From a missing picture to a fan that won’t stop roaring, here is what we repair most on the Series X and Series S, what each repair involves and what it typically costs.

  • Most Common

    HDMI Port Damage

No signal, a flickering picture or a loose HDMI cable? Ports often fail when the console is knocked, dropped or carried with the cable still plugged in. We microsolder a new HDMI port onto the board under the microscope, then test the picture before your Xbox goes home.

    Typical price$150 to $220Lifetime warranty

  • Common

    Overheating and Loud Fan

Fan roaring, or shutting down mid-game? Dust and dried-out thermal paste are common causes. We strip the console down, clean the whole cooling system and apply fresh thermal paste, then test it under load.

    Typical price$160 to $25012-month warranty

  • Torn Fan Connector

Fan not spinning after you opened the console to clean it? The fan connector on the board is delicate and can tear away. We microsolder a replacement connector, then run the fan under load to confirm your Xbox cools properly.

    Typical price$160 to $250Lifetime warranty

  • Power Supply Failure

Shutting down by itself, clicking, or switching off straight after you turn it on? A failing power supply can't deliver steady power to the console. We diagnose the fault, repair the power supply and test your Xbox under load.

    Typical price$170 to $250Lifetime warranty

  • Disc Drive Faults

Discs not reading, grinding noises or a disc stuck inside? This is a Series X repair, as the Series S has no disc drive. We find the cause, repair the drive and test it with real discs.

    Typical price$180 to $250Lifetime warranty

  • Board-Level Repair

Restarting at random, or a fault that a clean and fresh paste did not cure? We microsolder complex motherboard faults in-house, from failed chips to damaged traces, under the microscope, then stress-test your Xbox before it goes home.

    Typical price$180 to $300Lifetime warranty

Why Choose Us

A Franklin Xbox Repair Shop That Works at Board Level

Serious Xbox faults often live on the motherboard, so we do the microsoldering ourselves at our Franklin workshop.

  • In-House Microsoldering

HDMI ports, torn fan connectors and board-level faults are repaired at our own bench, under the microscope.

  • Quote First, Then Your Approval

We assess your Xbox first and send a written quote. Nothing is repaired until you approve it, and we say so plainly if a repair doesn't make sense.

  • Fresh Thermal Paste, Every Time

Every Xbox we repair gets fresh thermal paste, so your console leaves our bench with its cooling renewed.

  • Genuine Parts, Shown on Your Quote

We fit genuine OEM parts where available and quality-tested aftermarket parts where not, and your quote shows which. Most repairs carry a lifetime warranty.

Inside Our Franklin Workshop

Our own bench is set up for board-level work: a hot-air rework station, a temperature-controlled soldering station, a PCB preheater and a trinocular microscope. Since 2020 we have repaired consoles for Canberra gamers, and for customers who post theirs to us from across Australia.

How It Works

Four Steps From Booking to Your Xbox Back Home

Our Xbox repair service works the same way whether you visit our Franklin workshop or post your console to us.

  1. Step 1: Book or Request a Quote

    Day 1

Complete the booking or quote form in about two minutes. Posting it? Book mail-in online and your packing instructions arrive by email.

  2. Step 2: Drop It Off or Post It

    Franklin or Mail-In

Bring your Xbox to our Franklin workshop at your appointment, or post it to us from anywhere in Australia.

  3. Step 3: We Assess and Quote

    On Arrival

We open it, find the fault and send your written quote. Nothing is repaired until you approve it; decline, and only our diagnostic fee applies.

  4. Step 4: Repair and Return

    1 to 3 Working Days

We repair and retest your Xbox. Collect it from Franklin, or we return it by Australia Post Express, tracked and signed.

Most repairs currently take 1 to 3 working days, based on our live workshop queue. Board-level faults can take longer, and we give you the timeframe with your quote. For mail-in, add Australia Post transit time.

Protecting Your Xbox's HDMI Port

Unplug the cable before you move the console, and switch the Xbox fully off before plugging anything in. Leave a little slack in the HDMI cable so its weight never pulls on the port.

How long does Xbox repair take?

Most Xbox repairs at Seki Gadgets in Canberra currently take 1 to 3 working days, based on our live workshop queue. Board-level faults can take longer, depending on the diagnosis and parts, and we give you the timeframe with your written quote. If you post your Xbox through our mail-in service, add Australia Post transit time. Express mail-in is diagnosed the same day when it arrives before 12 pm.

What Xbox models do you repair?

We repair the Xbox Series X, the console with the disc drive, and the Xbox Series S, the digital-only model, at our Franklin workshop in Canberra. Both get the same quote-first process and warranty tiers. We don't repair the Xbox One or older Xbox consoles. Our gaming console repair page lists the other consoles we repair, and if you're unsure which Xbox you own, describe it in the quote form.

How much does Xbox HDMI port repair cost?

Xbox HDMI port repair at Seki Gadgets in Canberra costs $150 to $220, with the Series S at the lower end and the Series X at the upper end. We microsolder a new port onto the board, test the picture and back the repair with our lifetime warranty. Your exact price is confirmed in a written quote before any work starts, and our diagnostic fee is waived when you go ahead with the repair.

Why is my Xbox overheating or so loud?

A roaring fan often means the console is struggling to shed heat. Common causes are dust clogging the heatsink and vents, thermal paste that has dried out, or a fan connector that has torn from the board. At Seki Gadgets in Canberra we strip your Xbox down, clean the cooling system and fit fresh thermal paste. Thermal service carries our 12-month warranty, and a new fan fitted during the service carries our lifetime warranty.

Do you use genuine parts for Xbox repairs?

We use genuine OEM parts wherever we can source them for your Series X or Series S, and quality-tested aftermarket parts where we cannot. Your written quote from Seki Gadgets shows which is which, so you know exactly what is going into your console before you approve the repair, and the warranty for your repair applies either way.

What's your warranty on Xbox repairs?

Most Xbox repairs at Seki Gadgets in Canberra carry our lifetime warranty: HDMI port, power supply, disc drive, fan connector and board-level repairs, plus any new fan fitted during a service. Thermal service and cleaning carry our 12-month warranty. The warranty covers workmanship and part failure, not new physical or liquid damage. Full terms are on our warranty page.

Do you repair Xbox controllers?

Yes. Xbox controller repair at Seki Gadgets in Canberra covers stick drift, and we also offer TMR joystick upgrades, with each controller quoted individually and a written quote before any work begins. Stick drift repairs with a factory or original replacement stick carry a 3-month warranty, and TMR joystick upgrades carry our lifetime warranty. Our stick drift guide explains why sticks drift.

Can you repair a liquid-damaged Xbox?

Liquid damage needs our dedicated water damage treatment, which has its own fee. At Seki Gadgets in Canberra we assess your Xbox first and only recommend going ahead if a repair is realistic. If it has been splashed or soaked, switch it off, unplug it and leave it off until it reaches us, as running a wet console risks further damage. Liquid damage is not covered by our warranty.

Is it worth repairing my Xbox?

That is your call, and our written quote lets you make it with the numbers in front of you. At Seki Gadgets in Canberra you receive the quote before any work starts, so you can weigh the repair against replacing the console. If a repair would cost more than the current market value of your Xbox, we will tell you. If you decline, only our diagnostic fee applies, plus return postage if you posted it.

PS5 Slim was overheating and stopping. Seki explained the common causes. They provided emails detailing stages of work and photos. Shaun also noted the lack of cover plates and identified those which would fit. He very generously installed them for us on pickup. At home, housemate immediately noticed the lack of noise. Very happy!
